Ok the whole reason I own a crockpot is so that I can put something in it in the morning, go to work all day, and have a delicious STEW waiting for me when I get home.

Simple as that.

What are you stewing up in your crockpot?

Pork roast and sauerkraut (with some apple slices and brown sugar thrown in) is one of my favorites. And a good rump roast with an envelope of dry onion soup mix and a can of stewed tomatoes with carrots, onions and sometimes potatoes thrown in. Sometimes make it without the tomatoes so it's "beefier".

I have also made lasagna where you don't cook the noodles in advance, and it was delicious.

sure - just put any pork roast in the crock, pour a bag of sauerkraut over it, slice up some apples and put them on top of the pork and sauerkraut, then sprinkle brown sugar over the top. I usually put it on high for about a half hour or so, then switch to low and in 7 or 8 hours it's done to perfection. If like onions you can add those, too, but my family prefers it without onions.

I recently put a corned beef briskett in there with some potatoes and carrots! I didn't even get to try it, my boys scarfed it up,so I take it, it was good.

    I make Beef/Barley, splitpea/hamhock, beef/veggie, cream of potato

For beef barley I put in a packet of french onion soup mix, barley, cubed beef further cubed into fourths...
The split pea/pork hock, I use a chicken bouillon, finely chopped carrots and a potato...near the end a little bit of masa in water for thickener
Beef/veggie..cubed beef, carrots, potato, onion, celery, french onion soup mix, little bit of tobasco or other vinegry spice (picked jalapeno juice works)...
Um, cream of potato...I cut up two sizes of potato so that the smaller pieces break down to help form the base. I toss in some carrot, fresh garlic...near the end I use a potato masher for a minute, add a square of cream cheese, little bit of milk, fresh ground pepper, some tamari, before serving maybe add some sour cream, some grated mild cheddar or colby jack, pepper jack would be good...

I sort of go through the cabinets and toss stuff in as I go, so it's hard to have an actual recipe...

Today I had some leftover meat from the tacos I made the other day so I put that into the crockpot with some beef broth, a can of tomatoes, a can of tomato soup, diced some onions and green peppers and am letting that just cook away for a while. I will put some small macaroni noodles in a bit later and there's our supper for tonight. Serve it with cheese and sour cream on the side and a loaf of homemade bread or buns. Easy, easy, easy!!!!

Don't forget to add a turnip or two to your beef or lamb stew. Really, if you never use turnips, they work really well in a lamb or beef stew, and work great in the crock pot. They come out sweet and flavorful. Don't overdo it, just add one or two. But turnips work well here!

I made a good one the other day:

      6 organic chicken drumsticks,
      1 onion chopped,
      3 cloves or garlic, sliced
      1 huge heirloom tomato, chopped,
3 sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped
      1 cup of white wine
      1 cup of water
      1 cup of broth
1 foot long twig of fresh rosemary
3 dried anaheim chillies, de-seeded and chopped
      1 Tbsp of sea salt

cooked on low for about 6 hours. Yum!!

These days, I am wanting to economize as much as possible, in such uncertain economic times. Using things like drumsticks in the crock pot, per your stew recipe, Lola, is great, because the meat just falls off the bones so that they can be removed easily. Buying boneless chicken is so much more expensive! Also, a crock pot uses so much less energy than most other forms of cooking, so I save on my food bill and my electric bill, both!

mmm... I've got some white wine to use up - tossing it in the crock with some chicken & rosemary (and other goodies) sounds like a great idea!

I'll admit that I tried a version of this recipe on the stove last night. Delicious! I would never have thought of putting a chile in chicken stew, but I happen to have them growing in my garden. What a nice pep it gave to the stew!
