Anyone ever made this in the crock?

If so, what did you do?

Thanks in advance!

My experience with dumplings has proved that the water needs to be boiling for the dumplings to turn out right. So, i would make the soup itself in the crockpot, pull it aside after the usual time (6-10 hours, i guess) and then boil a bit to make the dumplings in.

Okay, my two cents... C&D is, without question, a matter of deep family pride for both sides of my family. My mother's family, being from the south (Mississippi), has turned it into a full-blown religion. Even within my own family we have a dozen variations for every situation. We have a "quick dumpling" version (a la Bisquick), a "Swedish" version (with egg noodles), a spicy version (Tobasco- the stuff of life) and even a Delhi variation (made with curry and served with chutney on the side). So, as you can see, chicken and dumplings is now second on my list of "comfort foods." The first is my dear grandmother's secret recipe for buttermilk biscuits and country gravy.

Here's a variation we've had since the fifties. Ah, packaged foods...

    Chicken 'n Dumplings (Crockpot)

4 boneless skinless chicken pieces (breast or thigh), cut in small chunks
2 cans condensed cream of chicken soup
    1/4 cup onion, finely diced
    1/4 cup carrot, finely diced
    1/4 cup celery, finely diced
    1 bay leaf
    1 chicken bouillon cube
    2 cups water
2 (10 oz) packages refrigerated biscuits

Combine all ingredients, except biscuits, in slow cooker. Cover and cook on low for 5 to 6 hours. 30 minutes before serving, tear biscuit dough into 1-inch pieces. Add to your slow cooker; stirring gently. Cover and cook on HIGH for an additional 30 minutes or until biscuits are fluffed up and cooked through.

Awesome, please let me know. I haven't made this one in years... maybe just a pride thing. Well, that and we've tried to be slightly more conscious about using organic and whole foods. Although, we found a Seventh Day Adventist market last year that actually has whole wheat refrigerated biscuits. Trader Joe's carries organic cream of chicken soups... hmm.

          Bon Appetite, y'all!

Hey Rev, do you stir the raw biscuit dough into the soup part of the C&D? I just can't see that I could float 20 oz. of biscuit dough on top of the soup in my crock.

I need an answer by Tuesday.... Thanks in advance (-:

does this recipe come out soupy or does the liquid thicken up on its own?

To answer Sam and T0p's questions at the same time. A little of the biscuit dough does "thicken" the soup, but it's kinda' thick to begin with. You only add a couple cups of water. As for the dough "floating" on top, well, it's supposed to cover the entire mixture. By the time it's done you've got a little dry layer on top and the juicy, creamy soup soaked stuff underneath. It's definitely a texture thing. I hope that you enjoy it!

I think I'm gonna try that C&D crockpot recipe tonight. But, does anyone have a good, homemade recipe that they'd be willing to share? You can PM me with it. I've been craving them badly, but amazingly, even my Betty Crocker cookbook doesn't contain the recipe. My grandmother used to make awesome ones, but she died before she ever got the chance to tell me how to make it. :(

              Hey, Deux'd

Care to share that one with the gang?

I actually made a chicken stew in my crockpot yesterday, then put it in a big pot on the stove and threw in the dumplings to cook. Got rave reviews!

My dumpling recipe goes something like this (I like it, but I have no idea how authentic it is, or how it compares to how others do it):

              1 1/2 C. flour
              1 tsp. salt
              2 tsp. baking powder
              3/4 cups milk
              1/4 cup butter
              parsley

Melt the butter and stir all ingredients together. Drop sticky dough by the spoonful onto simmering chicken stew. Cook 10-20 minutes.

OK, I made Rev's C&D recipe last night. Like Samantha and someone else, I was concerned about adding the refrigerated biscuit dough and whether the dish would be too thick or thin, but I followed the directions as written, and the result was amazing! It was delicious!! Follow the directions exactly and it will be wonderful. I can't wait for leftovers!!

            Thanks so much!

I'm so thoroughly pleased that you enjoyed it. Like I said before, chicken and dumplings is a matter of real pride in my family. I come from a family where "food is love" which may explain why I had to have gastric bypass surgery three years ago. I can't eat the same but DAMMIT I still love to cook and am passing on my family's recipes to my fiancee and her kids... and you guys.

              Welcome to the family, Carl!

I am passing this recipe on to my mother, too. I always love it when a recipe tastes like the recipe and not just a "soupy mess."

I'm making this right now for tomorrow and I don't have a sceond can of cream of chicken soup!

I wonder if I will have time to get one before I put it on? Or it will be very chunky I guess. Help, Rev?

I don't have any other cream soups, just some ready to eat chicken & noodle.

Sam, so sorry I didn't catch this until this morning. The cream of chicken is best because of the creaminess, but just about any chicken soup is fine. You may want to substitute a cup of milk for one of the cups of water, just for the flavor. I've also made this with Progresso soups, before, and it cooks long enough to break down some of the chunkiness. You may try hitting it with a hand blender if you want to break it down even more, but that shreds the chicken so it's your call.

For any who want to try it, omit the bay leaf and add a dash of thyme, sage and just a dash of liquid smoke for a nice "wintery" spice that reminds me of Thanksgiving stuffing. You can also use turkey instead of chicken to complete the illusion.

                    Bon Appetite!

I just had to announce that I enjoyed this recipe SO much last weekend that I made it AGAIN last night. This time, I used THREE cans of refrigerated biscuits (because my friend LOVED the "homemade dumplings" I made last time).

I made this... it was very good.

I'm not too sure if I followed the recipe excactly (I never do), but before I added the biscuits, it seem a little too soupy for me. I mixed some cornstarch mile (about 1/4 cup each) then stirred it in very well.

                        Came out great!

P.S. I didn't use finely chopped veggies. Whole mini carrots, chopped celery, chunks of onion... added more spice -- whole pepper corns, capers, all spice, dried parsely. It needed salt at the table.

Paul, excellent suggestion with the cornstarch. I think it tends to depend on the canned soup you use. I've always stuck with Campbells, but they thicken theirs, I'm sure. Also, did you use the bouillon? That usually adds the extra salt, but if you used one that is low-sodium or, uh, higher quality it may need a dash or two, you're right.

Capers, allspice and parsley? You're definitely making it your own, awesome!

I'm going to try every one of these suggestions, you guys. You make me so proud!

Thanks again, Paul, and I'm glad that you enjoyed it.

Actually, having had this TWICE now in two weeks (*pats Rev on the shoulder*), this recipe includes plenty of salt (for my taste) in the 2 cans of soup and the bouillon cube. The two cups of water and two cans of soup provide the perfect consistency after 5ish hours, and the biscuits thicken the recipe even more. Parsley, allspice and PEAS would add even more to this dish! Hmmm ... maybe next week. Ha!

Hey, if you want to go nuts, you can make this dish more "ethnic" by trying a couple of things.

Mexican - Omit the carrot and bay leaf and add green chiles, oregano and serve with your favorite salsa. (If you want it REALLY spicy I have put in a tablespoon or two of roasted chipotlé pepper ground in the blender)

Indian - omit the buillon and add a tablespoon of curry and a teaspoon of garam masala. Serve with chutney on the side

Italian - omit the carrot, celery and bouillon and add basil, LOTS of garlic, chopped fennel and some italian sausage

This is such a wonderfully flexible dish, everyone. Let me know what your ideas are.

                              <pen in hand>

I love the idea of Indian chicken and dumplings!

My crockpot is of the tall narrow variety (see my avatar, that's my family of crockpots on there) and could only fit about half a tube of biscuits on the top. They were the large Pillsbury buttermilk ones - I baked the rest.

Yes, nexttime I would add peas (I love peas) but I thought this was great!

I made this for Thanksgiving dinner, instead of the traditional turkey. All I can say is that it was fabulous! I think next time I'll cook the biscuits for a little bit longer, as they weren't done enough for my taste, but this is definitely a new favorite! If you don't mind, Rev, I'm gonna give this recipe to all my friends and family.

As my loving grandmother would have said, "Shucks, y'all, it's the love that makes it extra special." You really do make me blush. Thanks for the compliments, Carl and Samantha.

I've been off Tribe for a couple of weeks because I've been so busy moving from Southern CA to Portland, OR. Whew! What an ordeal. The job that I had lined up before I got here fell through so now I'm frantically looking for work. Of course, my humble (VERY humble) crockpot, yielded vegetarian chili last night. I'll be using it to make a batch of lentils tomorrow, methinks. We're living very modestly while I try to get work. I know that it's funny to say this, but we live better with our slow cooker. It helps me to cook simple but delicious dishes in large quantities so I save time, money and have options that help me and my family to feel a little less "deprived." During the less lean times it still helps us to save money by allowing me to give the less-expensive cuts of meat or other ingredients a little extra love and attention that they deserve.

Anyone have any more variations for C&D worth mentioning? I always love hearing them.

                                            Love and light, dear ones.

Well, my birthday was yesterday and I decided for my birthday dinner I wanted comfort food. I made the crockpot chicken & dumplings and it turned out terrific. For my birthday my in-laws got me a brand new 6 quart oval "Smart-Pot" that switches to "keep warm" mode after the cooking time expires. I made a double batch of the soup and could only fit the usual two tins of biscuits on top, but it was fantastic. I also added about a teaspoon of dried rosemary and a quarter teaspoon of freshly ground white peppercorns (I use a mortar & pestle to grind my dried herbs). It really was terrific.

I made a vegetable curry at the beginning of the week that consisted of a head of cauliflower, 4 potatoes, half a head of cabbage, two onions, 4 carrots (all diced small) and a cup and a half of dried/split mung beans (moong dal we got in an Indian spices store in CA before we left). I threw in a "box" of veggie broth and cooked the whole thing on high for six hours. Yum.

I think Saturday may yield a batch of "peel a pound soup" for my wife. Ah, life with the crockpot. It sure helps our budget... considering I still haven't found a job yet. Yikes!

                                              Love and light, dear ones.

I figured I bump this thread after trying out the Rev's C&D in my crockpot this past weekend. It came out really good and I used the following variations

3 - half chicken breasts, cubed
          1 - yellow onion diced
          1 - carrot, diced
          2 - stalks celery, diced
3 - cans cream of chicken soup
          1 - cup water
          1 - bay leaf
          1 Tbsp Beau Monde seasoning
          S & P to taste
1 - 16 oz pack of uncooked biscuits

I threw all of it into the crockpot and let it cook on high for about 8 hours. I put the biscuits on top and (due to the aroma and my hunger) ended up eating before the biscuits were completely done. Regardless, I devoured two bowls full and about half of the biscuits.

I'll try this again soon, with the following corrections:

          2 - carrots, chopped
          4 - stalks celery, chopped
          2 - potatoes, chopped
1 - cup of frozen peas

I think I will generally chop up the veggies into bigger pieces as this time around it was more like a soup than a stew.

          Thanks for that recipe!
