Hi,
My mother used to make this chicken dish often where she'd take chicken breasts, sour cream, cream of mushroom soup, cream of celery soup, chopped mushrooms, and chopped celery, and bake it for 4 hours. It was delicious.
I'm wondering if I could do this in a crock pot. I'd love to put everything together the night before, turn it on before I leave for work, and come back to a sumptuous meal. What do you think? On low or high? I'm not really a cook, so I have no idea how to do this.
Also, is it safe to leave the crock pot on all day when I'm not home?

Re: Chicken Thing
11/21That sounds yummy!! Only thing that comes to mind is that you may want to wait to add the sour cream until the end. Say, mix it in and let it sit another 20 minutes ( ? )
Yep, leave it on all day 6-8 hours should be long enough to cook the chicken on Low. I'm a little OCD-ish about leaving the crock on when I'm not home too. But I just make sure the counter is clean & clear of meltable items before I go. I have never heard of a crock starting a fire.
Good luck Andie!

Re: Chicken Thing
11/21Thank you! I can't wait to try it!
...question, though, why wait for the sour cream? I usually mix it in with the soup to create the sauce. I guess I could wait, but I'm just wondering what the reason would be. :) -

Re: Chicken Thing
11/21I just can't imagine cooking dairy for 6-8 hours. I've seen comments on this tribe about a "no milk" rule for crocks. I haven't done it, so I may be talking out of my bum ;) ...
Can anyone clarify the "no milk" rule??

Re: Chicken Thing
11/21"Cream of" seems to do fine - I've seen several recipes for crockpots using them.

Re: Chicken Thing
11/21Milk will separate and depending on the mixture sour cream might too. It depends on what it's mixed with. -

Re: Chicken Thing
11/21yeah, they suggest to put any dairy in last and leave it for only 20 minutes. but cream soups on their own do fine. -

Re: Chicken Thing
11/21Sour cream should be okay when it's mixed in with the soups.
And if you are worried about fire possibilities - just put the crock in an empty - clean sink.
The only time you should have to worry about fire is if the cord is loose or frayed, but this solutions seems to appeal to my OCD friends...
