Does anyone have a good bread recipe for the crock pot? I'm looking for a basic wheat bread recipe. My crock pot cookbook only has desert bread recipes and they require putting the bread in a coffee can. I don't have one of those. And besides, can't you just put it directly in the crock pot? I don't care if it comes out shaped like that...

i have used this one off of cooks.com there are probably better out there. but everytime i ve made it, it comes out great i just use a regular loaf pan since it fits in my crock pot ive never tried just putting the dough directly into the liner
HONEY WHEAT BREAD
2 c. warm reconstituted dry milk (or skim milk)
2 tbsp. vegetable oil
2 tbsp. honey
2 tbsp. molasses
3/4 tsp. salt
1 pkg. active dry yeast
3 c. whole wheat flour
3/4 c. bran
1/4 c. wheat germ
Preheat crock pot on high setting for 30 minutes. Combine warm (not hot) milk, oil, honey, molasses, salt, yeast and half the flour. With electric mixer, (use dough hook) beat well for about 2 minutes. Add remaining flour; mix well. Place dough in well-greased baking pan; cover. Let stand 5 minutes. Place in crock pot, cover and bake on high setting 3 hours. -

Is the crust Hard or Soft? Does it actually brown?

it does actually brown, not as rich a brown as when i do it in the bread machine but it does brown and it has a soft chewy texture. and it doesnt seem to dry out as fast as when i bake it the machine either. i admit the first time i made it i must have done something wrong it was sort of like a 2in tall pita. I think the yeast was dead though.

I'm sorry, I saw the heading and my first reaction was "EEEWWWWWW". Still is. But I guess I'm a purist when it comes to bread.
Bread should be done by hand. Not in a machine.
It never looks or tastes right when it's not hand done.
Just my opinion, but there is absotluely nothing like freshly baked crusty bread fresh out of the oven. And it really does not take a long time. But, you do need the air circulation that happens in the oven. Otherwise you get a solid lumpy yeasty glob.
You can start it in the morning, let it rise while you are at work, then put it in the oven when you get home, about an hour later - toasty goodness.
